"Her" and Signs

Among the litany of questions asked in 2 ou 3 choses que je sais d'elle is the following: what is an image? What is a sign? In what way can we distinguish, for example, an image of Marina Vlady (as Juliette) from an image taken from a magazine or comic strip or billboard? Is this just one more image – one more sign – put into circulation in our society of the spectacle? Is there a way that this image (or any image) can resist this reduction to just another sign? And what exactly is a resistant-image? How might it work against the spectacle that is modern life? Or can it? And does it matter? Is there any "use-value" to an image (as Marx might say)? Or have they all entered into the system of "exchange value" and abstract equivalence (where value is determined by extrinsic forces and solely in terms of monetary worth)?
